Export Shipping Label Data

to a third-party shipping manifest system

Use of a shipping manifest system in a publisher warehouse to post and to track shipments is increasingly commonplace. If invoice-shipping information is in the database of the manifest system, shipping labels can be printed as packages are processed. Standard Cat’s Pajamas modules allow export of customer information. But shipping labels or manifest systems usually require information that is not in the customer file, such as an invoice number, purchase order, or shipping instructions.

Customize the Cat’s Pajamas module for printing shipping documents with an additional option to export shipping label information. Otherwise, warehouse packing or shipping clerks may be required to enter information manually. If adding this option saves fifteen to twenty minutes a day in manual entry, it will pay for itself in less than a year.

Most shipping manifest systems have data-import capabilities. Many can be mapped to read particular fields in a file in a particular order. The Cat’s Pajamas can facilitate this process by providing a file in a comma-separated-variable-record-length format (CSV). The first record in the file can include field-name labels for the exported data. The export file can include ship-to-customer address information, invoice number, customer purchase order information, desired shipping method, extra shipping instructions, and the like. Instead of printing shipping labels from Cat’s Pajamas, the operator chooses the option to export the data to a file.

A standard data-export interface for a shipping manifest system is available for Release 4.1 systems; interfaces for Release 3.1 systems are custom.

Some publishers combine this enhancement with other options. For example, some print a bar code on the packing slip to eliminate manual entry of the invoice number into the manifest system. For more information, read Print Bar Codes on Packing Slips or Invoices.

Other publishers add the option to import data to confirm shipments. For more information, read Import Data File to Confirm Shipments.

For more information, email the name of your shipping manifest system and its data-file import requirements with your questions (including your name and company name) or call at 800-827-2287. If you require an export file with line-item information and mailing label information, please read Export Fulfillment Data.
