Laser-printer Forms
for packing slips, invoices, credit memos,
or customer statements
Some publishers wish to print some or all of their forms for packing slips,
invoices, credits, or customer statements on a laser printer, instead of a
dot-matrix printer. In all honesty, we are a bit skeptical about the benefits
of using a laser printer instead of a dot-matrix printer. For one thing,
publishers usually want file copies of invoices and credits – and multi-part
forms are easily printed on dot-matrix printers.
Some publishers combine printing on laser forms with the
Document Archive
module and rely on that module for reprinting their file copies at will.
Publishers with release 4.1 systems can set a flag in the customer record to
indicate that two or more copies of invoices are required. Other publishers
may choose to print the batch or range of invoices or credits twice.
Cat’s Pajamas programmers have worked with many publishers to enable
invoices, credits, or customer statements to be printed on laser printers.
There are some uncertainties that may make the project a bit challenging:
-
Typically, laser printers have minimum left, right, top, and bottom
margins, which vary from brand to brand or model to model. Generally,
dot-matrix printers can print anywhere on the page.
-
Laser printers may automatically adjust line-spacing or character widths
to print within the allowable margins. Dot matrix printers default easily to
10 characters per inch and 6 lines per inch, and don’t’ adjust the spacing.
-
Printing to laser printers tends to be brand/model specific. Therefore,
testing for laser-printer forms at Cat’s Pajamas is generally irrelevant. Instead,
Cat's Pajamas transmits and installs the programming at a mutually convenient time
for doing a bit of testing. Then the publisher prints a test sample. If
everything is correct, great! Otherwise, the programmer may uninstall the
laser printing and reinstall the dot-matrix printing until a revised program
is ready once again for installation and testing.
