Multiple Inventory
Bin/Bulk Locations
Standard Cat’s Pajamas systems offer a bin location for tracking inventory
for each title. Release 4.1 systems have extra fields for displaying
additional bin or return locations. Standard Cat’s Pajamas systems track
inventory at the primary bin level.
This optional module tracks inventory quantities in an unlimited number of
bulk locations. Publishers who wish to record inventory quantity and
locations for separate bin and bulk storage areas may wish to consider this
additional module.
When the option to “Track Inventory Bulk Locations” is active, the primary
location field in the book record indicates the bin. The displayed quantity
figure in the bin is calculated as the difference between the total on hand
and the sum of the quantities held in the other "locations." Bulk locations
can be created as inventory is received. Stock can be moved between bulk
locations or to a bin. Bulk locations for a particular item can be viewed
within the program to view book information.
Bin inventory locations are created when the book record is maintained.
Bulk locations are maintained within the module to receive, issue, move, or
transfer inventory. All inventory locations are associated with a title; there
is no option to create a bulk inventory location without assigning inventory
to it.
All inventory for an item within a particular warehouse is available to the
order-entry module. Cat’s Pajamas always relieves inventory from the primary
bin location. If there is insufficient inventory within the bin but sufficient
inventory within other warehouse locations, the bin location will display a
negative inventory quantity. Inventory in bulk locations is not relieved
automatically. A negative inventory quantity displayed for a bin indicates
that stock needs to be moved from a bulk location.
Some publishers want the capability of
tracking multiple bulk locations,
but do not wish to take on the extra work of updating the inventory quantities
in Cat’s Pajamas every time stock is moved. This can be achieved by assigning
a single copy of a title to a Cat’s Pajamas bulk location and then by
receiving the rest of the inventory into the primary bin location.
Publishers adding the module to track inventory bulk locations to Cat’s
Pajamas may wish also to print one or more bulk locations on
shipping
documents. Shipping documents can be customized with that capability. For
example, the bin and primary bulk location could be printed in separate
columns with other title information on packing slips or pick summaries. Or a
certain number of bulk locations could be printed underneath title
information.
