Royalty Processing Based on Paid SalesStandard Cat’s Pajamas systems calculate royalties on line items from shipments posted during a month. The royalty module draws monthly sales data from the shipment history archive. Information about the lifetime number of units sold and the number of free or other non-royalty quantities is obtained from the book summary history archive file. Some publishers calculate royalties, instead, on paid sales. The standard Cat’s Pajamas royalty module can be reconfigured to use a monthly archive of paid invoices. This also requires configuring the month-end closing module to create additional monthly archives of paid line-item information. And it requires creating and updating an additional summary of the lifetime number of paid book units for calculating royalty contracts that vary based on quantity. Whether based on shipped or paid sales, the royalty functions are the same. Cat’s Pajamas can be configured to calculate royalties either on shipped sales or paid sales. It is not possible to convert royalties based on shipped sales to paid sales or vice versa. Royalty escalators are based on units, either shipped or sold.
