Area Activities

Tourism is an important industry in the area, so there are generally plenty of things to do when Cat's Pajamas isn’t keeping your nose to the grindstone. One of our personal favorites is a sunset from Deception Pass or Washington Park (Anacortes city park). A ferry ride among the San Juan Islands on a sunny day is not to be missed—seeing the Islands on misty days is a special treat, too. The tulip fields blooming in spring are unimaginably beautiful.

Kayaking is high on the list of area sports. There are lots of hiking areas—an active volcano, Mount Baker, is close enough to offer high-mountain trails and meadows as well as winter snow-boarding and skiing. The North Cascades National Park is a place for a drive, short hikes, or long back-country trecks. Anacortes has a community forest full of well-marked trails. Trail maps are available at the visitor center. Cycling is an area favorite, too.

The Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon hosts classic movies, local and national musical groups, and artistic films.

La Conner is a great place to find unusual Northwest gifts. Wonderful art galleries are plentiful in both Anacortes and La Conner.

Then there are the local festivals:
