Processing RoyaltiesFor many publishers, royalty statements are the physical symbols of their relationships with people who are critical to their success: their authors. Unfortunately, royalty statements can also be costly and time-consuming to prepare, easy to do incorrectly, and a source of frustration twice yearly or more. The Cat's Pajamas can take the angst out of royalty processing by automating most of the job, leaving your staff time to review, correct, and make those decisions only humans should make. Automatic Transaction TrackingThe Cat's Pajamas system automates the entire royalty calculation process and can handle virtually any royalty provision. Basic calculation formulas are defined during system setup, and more can be added if the need arises. You specify which calculation formulas apply to each book and author as contracts are created. From there, the system automatically tracks all transactions that affect each contract. View an author's royalty account and earnings information. It's fast and easy to locate information at any time. Contract ProvisionsOur royalty system can handle nearly all of the provisions a creative acquisitions staff can devise. Apply different rates for different types of sales (foreign, domestic, high discount, book club, at-or-below-cost, etc.), base rates on multiple unit escalators, and calculate based on list or net price or a flat dollar per unit sold. We can create custom "adjusted prices" to deduct certain costs from the accumulated dollar basis before the rate is applied. Statement ProcessingProcess royalties each month to obtain an estimated royalty liability figure. When statements are due,
An unlimited number of authors/royalty recipients for each title can be handled, each of whom may be paid under a different calculation formula. Free books automatically excluded from calculations and rate escalations based on units sold. Other non-royalty sales (such as book clubs, sales to authors) can be excluded from calculations and escalator totals. Reserves against returns can be created automatically, based on your own formulas, then refunded in the next period, and another reserve calculated. You can specify joint accounting between certain titles. Then, the system can automatically apply earnings for one title against the unearned advance balance for another by the same author. Link titles to calculate combined escalator unit sales levels (cloth and paper editions of the same title, for example).
